I’ve been obsessed with Sophie Hunter since I first saw her on my TikTok FYP. There was just something about her, those red curls and that Natasha Lyonne-esque voice deadpan-rapping while she walks the streets of NYC. She’s had a handful of singles since 2021, but Hunter, the New Haven native who’s been steadily building buzz with singles like Cvnt and Fight!, has finally dropped the payload we’ve been waiting for with her six track EP WAIL!. The EP is a testament to her growth as an artist, showcasing a maturity that belies her relatively short time in the spotlight.
From the moment the needle drops , Hunter grabs you by the eardrums and doesn’t let go. Her self-described “pop+rap” style is less a fusion and more a full-on collision of genres, with shrapnel flying in all directions. It’s messy, it’s loud, and it’s glorious. However, don’t let the cacophony fool you – there’s method to this madness. Hunter’s lyrics are a masterclass in wordplay, with more double entendres than a late-night comedy show. She weaves tales of the female experience with the dexterity of a verbal contortionist, leaving you reaching for the replay button to catch what you missed the first time around. This album has capital-R Range.
Is WAIL! perfect? No. At times, Hunter’s ambition outpaces her execution, but that’s what makes this EP so exciting. It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s exactly what the doctor ordered for a music scene that sometimes feels in danger of flatlining. In an era where female voices are demanding to be heard, Hunter isn’t just speaking up; she’s screaming from the rooftops. and we are absolutely here for it.
