In a move that’s equal parts brilliant and masochistic, we’re dropping our October playlist, and it’s a beautiful disaster. Get ready to be spooked and left on read, music lovers! The Throb: GHOSTED is a wickedly clever sonic séance that will have you checking your phone for texts from both the living and the dead. Nothing says Spooky Season quite like ghosts, ghouls, and that person who suddenly vanished from your life without a trace.
Kicking off with Z Berg’s Better the Devil, the playlist dives headfirst into the kind of tracks that make you want to dance in a graveyard (or your ex’s front yard – we won’t tell). Florence + The Machine’s Big God follows, because Florence Welch’s otherworldly vocals are a soothing salve to the saltiest of wounds.
CHVRCHES’ Final Girl brings that sweet, sweet synthpop angst, while Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Heads Will Roll is the dance-punk anthem for anyone who’s ever fantasized about their ex meeting an untimely end. Catharsis, but make it cunt.
Midway through, we hit a streak of tracks that’ll have you reaching for your black lipstick and ouija board. Graveyard Club’s Witchcraft and the bird and the bee’s Witch serve up some indie-pop sorcery that’s more addictive than your ex’s Instagram stories.
Because it’s not a spooky playlist without a little industrial metal, Rob Zombie’s Living Dead Girl makes an appearance. It’s sandwiched between some major deep indie cuts that’ll have music snobs nodding in approval while they pretend they’re not also nursing a bruised ego.
The playlist wraps up with Chelsea Wolfe’s Feral Love, because if you’re going to end a breakup-slash-Halloween playlist, you might as well do it with some gothic folk that sounds like it was recorded in an abandoned cathedral.
Look, I’m not saying GHOSTED will exorcise your dating demons or make that cute bartender text you back, but it might just be the primal scream session you need this October. Remember, darlings, sometimes the scariest thing isn’t the ghost in your attic – it’s the one in your inbox. After all, in the world of Throb, every day is Halloween, and every ignored text is just another excuse to turn up the volume. Happy haunting!
